A university policy institute’s research brief on why the Afro-Latino population is so hard to count. The numbers do the talking: nearly 30% of self-identified Afro-Latinos also identify as white, and about one in seven do not identify as Latino, which means every standard counting method misses part of the picture. The brief also reports what respondents themselves say about colorism and visibility inside and outside Latino communities. We cite it for the counting problem; the numbers are the story, and they explain why direct questions keep finding people the forms lose.
