The 2022 census found 92.1 million Brazilians, 45.3% of the country, declaring themselves pardo, meaning mixed, making it Brazil’s largest group and putting it ahead of branco for the first time since 1991. The Black share rose to 10.2%, and the Indigenous count reached its highest recorded level. The agency announced the results in Salvador’s Pelourinho, the heart of the Blackest major city outside Africa, a venue that says this was understood as more than a spreadsheet.
