Boston Indicators looked at a statistical oddity in Massachusetts: Some Other Race had become the state’s second-largest racial group. Their explanation is the clearest we have seen. Most Latinos experience being Latino as part of their racial identity, so when a form insists on a separate race answer, huge numbers land in a category the government treats as an error.
