The difference is not the people. It is the question. When families are asked directly, Afro-Latinidad appears; when they are handed a two-part form, it disappears. The report also notes that nearly 30% of Afro-Latinos identify racially as white, a reminder that identity comes in layers, not single boxes.
The piece adds the hemispheric scale that American coverage often leaves out: roughly 15 times more enslaved Africans were taken to Spanish and Portuguese colonies than to the United States, and about 130 million Afro-descendants live in Latin America and the Caribbean today.
