Pew's freshly updated explainer on a question every mixed Latino family has answered at a kitchen table: being Hispanic is something you say about yourself, not something an ancestry chart decides. The authors report that about 11% of adults with Hispanic ancestry, roughly 5 million people, don't identify as Hispanic at all, and that 29.4 million Hispanics were counted as more than one race in 2024 — more than any single-race group. Thirteen percent of Hispanic adults told Pew they consider themselves Afro-Latino. The spine of this blog, in the newest numbers available.
