Brazilian Latino Identity in the US: What a Census Coding Error Shows Us
Under the federal definition written in 1997, Brazilians are not Hispanic or Latino, and anyone who checks the box and writes in Brazilian is quietly “recoded.” In 2020 the Census Bureau accidentally skipped that step, and Pew noticed what surfaced: at least 416,000 Brazilians in the United States, more than two-thirds of them, had identified as Hispanic or Latino, versus roughly 14,000 in a typical year.
